IS A LIFT CHAIR RIGHT FOR ME?
There comes a point in life when people feel like they are in between stages….they don’t want a piece of “geriatric” equipment in their home but life is getting difficult attempting to live like they once did even though they want to stay independent. While often looked at as something that only affects seniors, difficulty standing or sitting can actually affect people of all ages. One item that people can use that will help them is the lift chair. The lift chair enables someone to stand and sit on his or her own, without having to rely on a caregiver.
A lift chair is the same thing as a recliner with the added feature of raising a person into a near standing position. It can be stopped at any time when reclining or raising to achieve maximum comfort for the user. In the raised position, once simply needs to straighten up slightly, lean forward and stand up.
There are a number of medical conditions that are not age-discriminate that can make it difficult for someone to stand up under their own power or make it impossible to sleep in a bed, these include:
*Someone who has recently had or will have a knee or hip replacement
*Someone who is in hospice that cannot sleep in a bed
*Someone with arthritis issues in their knees or back
*Someone with hip issues
*Someone who is weak and unable to stand up on their own
*Someone with balance issues
*Someone with a neurological disease (i.e. Parkinson’s or M.S.)
*Someone who needs to sleep with their head propped up (Diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, acid reflux)
*Someone who needs to elevate their feet above their heart throughout the day to help keep leg and feet swelling under control.
Lift chairs come in many fabrics, colors and styles to coordinate in any home and with anyone’s tastes and if specially ordered, can be in stock within 7 business days. All chairs also come with a battery back-up in case the chair is in use when the power goes out.
One last thing to consider is a person’s size when picking out the perfect chair. If the chair is too large the person’s feet might not touch the ground when seated and can cause the user to feel unsafe in the chair. If the chair is too small it can cause new aches and pains because the chair doesn’t fit in the right places, i.e. lumbar support or neck rest. There is a right a chair for every person. Chattanooga Mobility & Lifts will help you find the perfect fit for your independence.
